Body Weight & the Female Athlete Triad for PSO HP Programs

September 27, 2012

Presented by CSC Pacific

Body Weight & the Female Athlete Triad for PSO HP Programs

October 1, 2012 from 4:00-5:30 pm
Creekside Recreation Centre, 1 Athletes Way, Vancouver

Dr. Trent Stellingwerff, CSC Pacific Senior Physiologist

Hilary Stellingwerff, 2012 Olympian

Body weight and body composition impact performance in every single sport, with vast differences between more weight dependent sports (e.g. running) and less weight dependent sports (e.g. swimming). However, many “A” type athletes take decreasing body weight to the extreme, resulting in poor health and eventually poor performance. In sport, this is primarily termed “Female Athlete Triad”, although this is not immune to males. Many times this issue can either initially go unnoticed by coaches and support staff or is ignored due to the delicate nature of body weight. This short presentation will take a physiology/elite coach perspective at the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to ideal body composition and periodization, using an elite female middle-distance athlete as a case-study.

How Athletics is Changing

June 7, 2012

Donna Harris, Director, Coach Development, Athletics Canada offers some LTAD insight in this article from Sport Manitoba

“At Athletics Canada, we know that running, jumping and throwing are not only skills for track and field but also are the basis for proficiency and enjoyment in many sports. Using the Long-term Athlete Development framework, we have designed our track and field curriculum to promote excellence within our sport while also developing athletes to enjoy other sports. Prior to the Athletics Canada Competition Review, all athletes whether they were 10 or 35 were competing in the same events. For athletics the issue was an adult competition structure transposed on children.

We know that the events in a track and field meet drives the type of training the athlete does. By changing the events to better suit the growth patterns of children and adolescents, we can make sure that the training is developmentally appropriate for athlete development…”

Also included – video clips with Sean Baynton,Coaching Coordinator, Athletics Manitoba answering some frequently asked LTAD questions.

Coaching Running

The signs of spring are in the air and the number of people running outside and enjoying the wonderful weather is increasing.  Warm weather marks the beginning of race season and running clubs, track clubs, university teams, and high school teams are all starting to get back into their rigorous training schedules. For running coaches this is the perfect time to review their plan and athletes for the season.  No matter what team/club you coach, you will encounter athletes with different styles, levels, and abilities and it is important to consider all of this when looking at the season ahead.

SIRC has compiled the following articles to help you learn more about the athletes you coach and how to help them reach their goals.

  3. NETWORKING:  Network and meet other like-minded coaches.  Off-site activities include Golf, Beach Volleyball, and the annual ICS Wine and Cheese social.
  4. ADVOCACY:  An outcome from this Advance will be a conference proceeding to provide recommendations for talent identification and development, and a series of best practices for coaches.  Your opinions and feedback will help to form this document.
  5. EXPERTISE: Four-Time Olympic Medalist in speed skating Kristina Groves, OTP Director of Technical Leadership and former NCI BC Grad Johnny Misley, Olympian and International level Coach Kurt Innes, OTP High Performance Advisor and International Cycling Coach Sean Scott, Physiologist and VP of Canadian Sport Centre Pacific Gord Sleivert, High Performance Director and Coach Mentor Dr. Andy Van Neutegem, and Rugby Canada High Performance Manager Mike Chu.

Laurier Primeau appointed Para-athletics Head Coach at Athletics Canada

December 9, 2011

Athletics Canada announced today that Laurier Primeau of Burnaby, B.C., has replaced Ozzie Sawicki of Calgary, Alta., in the position of para-athletics head coach leading into and at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.  Primeau has a wealth of technical and coaching experience including leading a national program into and in a major games situation.  Primeau’s main task and focus is on final team preparations and head coach duties at the 2012 Games in London, England.

As a whole Athletics Canada’s para-athletics program will be led by a group of technical leaders,  with Laurier at the helm of the London 2012 program, with a comprehensive review of the program post-Paralympic Games. “Our athletes and coaches will receive a clear high performance message,” said Martin Goulet, Chief High Performance Officer with Athletics Canada.  Goulet adds, “We are expecting enhanced motivation and confidence under Laurier’s leadership, he will provide strong direction and the required support to our targeted athletes.”

From preparation to delivery Laurier will serve as head coach for Athletics Canada’s Paralympic Games London 2012 program.  Primeau’s focus will be concentrated on two themes in particular.  The first is to establish clear lines of communication between coaching staff, integrated support team, targeted athletes and personal coaches.  The second is ensuring targeted athletes have everything required in their training environments in the lead up to the Paralympic Games.

Primeau, who led the Scottish Athletics 2010 Commonwealth Games Team, is currently head coach at Trinity Western University as well as a high performance para-athletics coach with Athletics Canada.  Notably Primeau has been working with Braedon Dolfo who recently broke the Canadian record in the T13 classification 100-metres en route to a bronze medal at the 2011 Parapan American Games.  From 2002 to 2009 he was involved with Canada’s national program as a coach in the areas of jumps, combined events and relays.  He served in a coaching capacity at two World Junior Championships and three Pan American Junior Championships and was a member of the national team from 1990 to 1998 competing in the 400-metre hurdles and 4×400-metres relay.
