About Sports Day in Canada

Sports Day in Canada, on Saturday, September 29, 2012, is a national celebration of sport, from grassroots to high-performance levels, in communities across Canada. Sports Day in Canada caps off a week of more than a thousand local events and activities, such as community-wide festivals, try-it days, open houses, games, competitions, meet-and-greets, tournaments, fun runs, spectator events and pep rallies, and includes a special television broadcast on CBC Sports. Sports Day in Canada is presented by CBC Sports, ParticipACTION and True Sport, working with national sporting organizations and their networks of coaches, athletes and enthusiasts across the country. Sports Day in Canada is generously supported by Sport Canada, Subway Restaurant and New Balance Canada and is expanding its reach in British Columbia thanks to a first-ever provincial partnership with B.C.’s Ministry of Health.  For more information about Sports Day in Canada, please visit:

How Athletics is Changing

June 7, 2012

Donna Harris, Director, Coach Development, Athletics Canada offers some LTAD insight in this article from Sport Manitoba

“At Athletics Canada, we know that running, jumping and throwing are not only skills for track and field but also are the basis for proficiency and enjoyment in many sports. Using the Long-term Athlete Development framework, we have designed our track and field curriculum to promote excellence within our sport while also developing athletes to enjoy other sports. Prior to the Athletics Canada Competition Review, all athletes whether they were 10 or 35 were competing in the same events. For athletics the issue was an adult competition structure transposed on children.

We know that the events in a track and field meet drives the type of training the athlete does. By changing the events to better suit the growth patterns of children and adolescents, we can make sure that the training is developmentally appropriate for athlete development…”

Also included – video clips with Sean Baynton,Coaching Coordinator, Athletics Manitoba answering some frequently asked LTAD questions.
