Trail Sport Heroes Announced
Nine sport volunteers to receive the Community Sport Hero Awards presented by Teck
RICHMOND, BC (May 15, 2013) – ViaSport and Sport BC will honour nine dedicated sport leaders from Trail on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 with the Community Sport Hero Awards presented by Teck.
The public award ceremony, hosted at the Best Western Plus Columbia River Hotel in Trail, celebrates the contributions of long-time community sport volunteers.
“The Community Sport Hero Awards are a celebration of volunteers who have contributed eight or more years to sport,” said Twyla Ryan, Chair of Sport BC. “Sport is crucial to the development of strong, healthy communities, and community volunteers, like the nine scheduled to be honoured, are essential to that success.”
The following individuals are the outstanding volunteers who were selected by their peers to receive the 2013 Community Sport Hero Awards in Trail:
- Brian Pipes, Baseball
- Brad Elliott, Baseball
- John D’Arcangelo, Floor Hockey
- Dale and Wendy Glover, Baseball
- Sheila Hawton, Special Olympics
- Sandra Rothwell, Special Olympics

Eligibility Requirements for nominating a Community Sport Hero®:
- Be an individual from the local community who makes a voluntary contribution to sport through coaching, officiating, boards, administration, special events, etc
- Be an individual (not an organization or foundation); and
- Has been or continues to be a dedicated sport volunteer for a minimum of 8 years

As the Sport BC Power of Sport Tour travels to Langley in April, so will Run Jump Throw. Starting things off is a RJT Community Workshop in Langley on Saturday, April 17th. The workshop will take place in the Willoughby Community Centre Rm #2 at the Langley Events Centre on 200th Street.
This 8 hour course includes how RJT fits in with general athletic development, the analysis of each skill and its technical progressions, the basic biomechanics of running, jumping and throwing, safety issues, RJT lesson plans, fun and games with RJT application and practical teaching and learning with kids!
After this fun filled day, you will be fully prepared to run your very own Run Jump Throw sessions with kids in your community.

Sport BC is proud to announce the finalists in 13 of the 19 award categories that will be presented at the upcoming 44th Annual Sport BC Athlete of the Year Awards, presented by TELUS which will take place on March 31, 2010.
