Summerfast, not so summer like, but still fast

Race number 9 in the Lower Mainland Road Race Series, the Summerfast 10K, was held in conditions fitting to the Stanley Park rain forest. Despite the wet conditions, the flat, seawall course produced quick times and close contests.

Having won in Kelowna last week, Jerry Ziak continued his winning ways, coasting home in 31:47. Behind him, a much closer contest played out, Nicholas Jirot took second in 32:09, with Toronto’s Jake Woloshyn third in 32:12. Fourth place went to top master Craig Odermatt in 33:18.

Natasha Wodak was an even more convincing winner on the women’s side, finishing a minute and a half ahead of her nearest competition in 35:22. But second, third and fourth places battled all the way around. Rachel Ruus prevailed for second in 36:51, over Anne-Marie Madden (37:03) and Melissa Ross (37:07). Top master was Teresa Nightingale in 40:50.

Having won double gold at the World Masters Championships earlier in the week, Lenore Montgomery produced the top age graded performance of the day. Her 58:49 clocking was worth 95.06%.

The incessant rain did not dampen the spirits as 319 finishers enjoyed VFAC’s home baked goodies post race.
