BC Athlete Assistance UPDATE – IMPORTANT INFO & CHANGES

Due to a change in rules by the NCAA (Affective August 1, 2013) BC Athletics athletes enrolled in a NCAA Division I school can now accept BC Athlete Assistance (Carding) for the Summer months (June – August). Due to this change, BC Athletics has decided to extend the deadline for all athletes until Friday, November 29, 2013 by 5:00PM. CHANGES FOR BC ATHLETICS NCAA ATHLETES

Under the new NCAA Division I rules, BC Athletics athletes enrolled in a NCAA Division I school can now accept BC Athlete Assistance. This is allowed due to new language (in yellow) under the following NCAA bylaw:

12.1.2.4.7 Exception for Training Expenses. An individual (propective or enrolled student-athlete) may recieve actual and necessary expenses [including grants, but not prize money, whereby the recipient has qualified for the grant based on his or her performance in a specific event(s)] to cover development training, coaching, facility usage, equipment, apparel, supplies, comprehensive health insurance, travel, room and board without jeopardizing the indivuidual's eligibility for intercollegiate athletics, provided such expenses are approved and provided directly by the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC), the appropriate national governing body (or for international student-athletes, the equivalent organization of that nation) or a government entity.”

Due to these new developments, BC Athletics athletes at a NCAA Division I school will be eligible for Summer Funding (June – August). Because athletes attending an NCAA Division I school have reasonable support by their institution during the NCAA Indoor and Outrdoor season and pre season (September – May), BC Athletics will adjust award amounts to reflect a 3 month period. For examples on this, please read below:

Example 1: BC Athletics NCAA Athlete who IS NOT Nationally Carded by Athletics Canada (NCAA Carding)

Under BC Athletics Summer Carding, Jane is now eligible for up to $750.00 CDN: ($3000.00 / 12 months = $250.00 x 3 months = $750.00)

Example 2: BC Athletics NCAA Athlete who IS Nationally Carded by Athletics Canada (NCAA Carding)

Mike Roberts (athlete) is a BC Athletics athlete and also attends South Western State, an NCAA Division I school. Mike has applied for 2013 BC Athlete Assistance and has been selected for National Carding by Athletics Canada as an NCAA Athlete. Mike also competed for BC at the 2013 Canada Summer Games. Athletes wishing to be considered for BC Athlete Assistance NCAA Summer Carding will still need to meet the selection criteria for funding (see: “Who is eligible and ineligible for the BCA Athlete Assistance Program” in the Application and Information packet)

For those athletes who have already submitted their application, there is no need to resubmit, as there are no changes to the application form and required materials.

The BC Athlete Assistance Program is currently under review by BC Athletics and the Track & Field Committee. If you have any questions, please contact the Technical Manager via email at garrett.collier@bcathletics.org.
