The inaugural running of the BlueShore Financial Spirit of the Shore Half Marathon took place yesterday, welcoming nearly 200 athletes to a new road running half marathon on the North Shore. “The weather was perfect. Clear skies and moderate temperatures made for amazing running weather, topped off with great views from along the scenic route”. says Race Director and Founder Dave Clark. “We are excited to have our new half marathon on the running calendar for athletes looking to run a pretty course, with lots of waterfront and mountain views. The North Shore is an ideal place for this sort of an event. We heard from many participants that this is their new favorite half marathon event, which is nice to hear” adds Clark.
The overall men’s category was won by Vancouver’s Anthony Skuce in a time of 1:16:47, and the ladies title was taken by Margreet Dietz of Squamish in a time of 1:27:14. Full results can be found online at the events home page www.spirithalfmarathon.com.
The BlueShore Financial Spirit of the Shore Half Marathon is managed by Whistler Friends Society and provides a professionally produced running event to athletes of all levels looking to run on the North Shore. While runners attended from 3 different countries, and 5 provinces, the majority of athletes came from the North Shore and Metro Vancouver; highlighting a desire for athletes to run close to home. “We heard from a lot of participants that they were so happy to have an event of this caliber so close by” adds Clark.
The event proudly supports 2 important charities: the oncology wards at BC Children’s Hospital and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada. While final numbers are still be tabulated, approximately $2,000 was raised through this event to support the causes.
