The third race in the Frontrunners Island Race Series, the Hatley Castle 8K, took place on Sunday, February 19. The race, which was organized by Frontrunners Athletic Club, saw 405 finishers.
James Lander won convincingly in 25:26 over Sean Chester (Aspire Running), second in 26:14. Third place was Shane Ruljancich (Prairie Inn Harriers) in 26:57. Claire Morgan (Aspire Running) won the Women’s Open in 31.01. Prairie Inn Harriers runners Julie Van Veelen and Sonja Yli-Kahila came second and third in 32:45 and 32:46. Top masters male was Hugh Trenchard in 28:50, top masters female was Rhonda Callendar (Island Road Racers) in 33:34.
“This year was a great event. The weather held out and we had a big turnout of participants,” said Nick Walker from Frontrunners Athletic Club. “The new course allowed for some new personal bests times and great finishing sprints. We had excellent support from volunteers and sponsors that helped the success of the event. We are very happy to be a part of the Frontrunners Island Race Series.”
The Frontrunners Green Jersey for the fastest open male sprinter over the last 100-metres was a tie – both Shane Ruljancich and Julien Marceau recorded a 13.20. In the masters category Danny Keyes won in 14:68. Heather Afford won the female open in 15:68 and Catherine Clarke the masters in 18:70.
The Prairie Inn Harriers, Victoria lead the club standings with 2050 points, followed by Comox Valley Road Runners with 990 and Frontrunners Athletic Club with 865.

The next race is the Cobble Hill 10K on February 26 (re-scheduled from January 22), followed by the Synergy Health Management Ltd Bazan Bay 5K on March 4.
