2011 BC Athletics Annual Awards – 2011 Hall of Fame Inductee Announced

BC Athletics is pleased to announce the 2011 Hall of Fame Inductee. 

 

Jack Taunton – Athlete, Builder, Sports Medicine Physician

Athlete:

Marathon Runner: Completed 62 marathons with a best performance of 2:25:29 and countless Road Races

Builder:

• Co-founder with Ivor Davies in 1971 of BC’s first Road Running Club and the naming of the club – Lions Gate Road Runners – which celebrated its 40^th Anniversary
• Founding member in 1971 of the Vancouver Marathon / Vancouver International Marathon 
• Co-founder with Doug and Diane Clement (Achilles Int’l T&F Society) of the Vancouver Sun Run in 1985
• Instrumental in taking long distance running to the masses and the promotion of Women’s Running
• Helped found and organize the James Cunningham Seawall Race in 1970
• A Lifetime Member of Lions Gate Road Runners – Jack helped organize 5, 10, 15 and 20 mile Road Races in Stanley Park in the 1970’s.

Sports Medicine Physician:

• Co-founder with Dr Doug Clement of the Terra Nova Sports Medicine Clinic 1977, Vancouver’s first Sports Medicine Clinic – as part of their family practice in Richmond.

National Photo Finish Clinic – “Getting Results”

DATE: Sunday, January 30, 2011

TIME: 9:30am – 1:00pm

LOCATION: Hilton Vancouver Airport, Richmond B.C. – 5911 Minoru Blvd, Richmond BC

A clinic/discussion led by David Weicker, ATO (Chief Judge Photo Finish for World Junior Championships 2010) and Sam Collier, BC Athletics Manager, Registration and Membership Services.

While the session is for those requiring a National Level Clinic, this session would be good for all aspiring photo finish chief judges, photo finish operators, meet organizers, secretariat staff, technical delegates and others. This session will focus on the “narrow aspects ” of timing a race through to the “broad aspects”, production of results from races and field events.

While it will not be a “technical” seminar on networking, there will be an overview of what it takes to network the photo finish aspects of results with the production of results using a data base system (for example using Hy- Tek Meet Manager). 

It will outline equipment and technical requirements, plus the roles of various players involved in making a track meet successful: (a) the meet director, (b) the technical delegate, (c) the competition secretary, (d) the photo finish chief judge, (e) the photo finish operators and (f) the results team.

This session will be discussion based.

Officials Update from Carol Cull

Hi Officials,

A reminder that our Officials’ Annual General Meeting will take place next month.  Guest speaker at this event will be Ron Bunting who will speak on the topic of Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD).  The information that he will present will have particular significance for those competitions in which the Junior Development as well as the 14 and 15-year-old Athletes will compete in the 2011 Track and Field Season.

 Update on some of our BC Officials

We hear from Stephen Barrington that Jackie Barrington has been transferred from the Royal Columbian Hospital to Eagleridge Hospital. She is staying in the rehab ward, room 173b

Jackie has been making slow but steady progress on her road to recovery and we are pleased that she has been transferred to a facility that is closer to family and where rehabilitation assistance will continue.

You will all remember that Shirley and Jeff Byington dealt with the tragedy of losing a number of beloved kitties in their house fire last Spring.  They are still in the process of having their home repaired, the work not expected to be completed until March of 2011.  Meanwhile they continue to camp out in their motor home.  Shirley and Jeff have said that they will see us all at the Officials’ AGM.

BC Cross Country Champs 2010

Public Service announcements for our officials’ members

Outdoor Track and Field season is over for the year….well, almost over. Some of us will be at the BC Seniors Games in September.  Then it’s really over. But there are other seasons starting. Check with your zone coordinator for exciting opportunities in Road and Cross Country events. And…….your hard-working Provincial Committee begins its annual paperwork season.

Upgrading

Officials who have completed the requirements for upgrading their certifications should send in the upgrading applications to Kathy Terlicher by September 15. Please review the requirements, and get the form from the Officials web page. You will also find Kathy’s contact information.

You can also find the upgrading survey on this page. Fill out the survey to give the committee information about your upgrading aspirations (evaluations and credits needed) for next season.

Recognition program

Level 3 and above member officials who have worked hard this year (12 credits) are eligible to receive a great uniform jacket in recognition for your efforts. Annual Awards for Officials for the 2010 season will be presented at the next BC Athletics AGM (December 3-5, 2010). The deadline for submissions is September 15, 2010. Road Running Division AGM

The BCA Road Running Division is responsible for examining the current status of Road Running in British Columbia; designing, planning, and recommending programs and policies to the Board of Directors; and implementing approved programs and policies to ensure the existence, growth, and development of Road Running in British Columbia.

The Annual General Meeting of the Road Running Division will take place on Wednesday, March 31 at 6:00pm, in Room 155, 3820 Cessna Drive, Richmond BC.
