Canadian women fourth, men ninth at FISU World Cross-country Championship

The Canadian team of 11 CIS cross-country runners raced today, Apr. 14, in Poland at the 2012 FISU World Cross-country Championship. Led by UVic cross-country and track coach Keith Butler, the Canadian women finished fourth overall, while the men finished in ninth.

An excellent performance by Toronto’s Tamara Jewett helped the Canadians to a men’s and women’s total of 46 points at the end of the race day. Jewett finished eighth and was followed by Guelph’s Carise Thompson, who finished 15th, and Laval’s Catherine Cormier, who finished 23rd.

Japan led the women’s team standings with 21 points and Romania was close behind at 23 points. Hosts Poland edged out Canada by one point for third place with 45 points.

“Tamara Jewett’s ninth-place finish was the top Canadian performance of the day,” said head coach Butler over e-mail from Poland. “It was simply outstanding. Carise Thompson had an exceptional race as well, especially for a sophomore, finishing 15th overall.”

In the first FISU World Cross-country Championship, held in Canada in 2010, the Canadian women finished with a bronze medal.

“It is a credit to all the CIS coaches and their programs that Canada was able to finish fourth overall in the women’s competition,” said Butler. “The women were only one point out of team bronze.”

On the men’s side, Canada finished ninth overall and were led by UVic senior Clifford Childs, who finished in 32nd. Guelph’s Allan Brett finished 40th and was followed by Vike Dylan Haight in 48th and Windsor’s Paul Janakowski in 49th.

“Cliff ran like a veteran, finishing 32nd overall against a very competitive field,” explained Butler. “Cliff was the last selection to the Canadian team so, his run showed the tremendous improvement he has made over the course of this season.
