New half-marathon lets runners experience Whistler’s mountain atmosphere and Olympic spirit

A new half-marathon will take place next year in Whistler, BC, one of North America’s premier mountain resort destinations, and organizers intend to build the Whistler Half Marathon into one of the ‘must-do’ events on runners’ race calendars.

The first annual race takes place June 4, 2011 on a 21.1 kilometer course that includes Whistler’s main village, scene of many celebrations during this year’s 2010 Winter Olympics. The gently-rolling course also winds through nearby neighbourhoods and along Whistler’s already-popular running paths, offering spectacular mountain views throughout.

“Whistler is a perfect place to offer a half-marathon road race because of the mountain atmosphere and energy, great scenery, and a beautiful course that people will find inspirational”, says race director Dave Clark. “Whistler displayed its incredible energy and spirit during the 2010 Winter Games. People who run this race, and spectators too, will experience the Whistler spirit and understand why the Games were so successful here.”

Registration for the race begins in early 2011. A portion of race fees will go to support the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada. Men’s, women’s, wheelchair and visually impaired divisions will be included.
